When we requested cross-validation of the same sample from Geochron, an American dating institution, and the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Lab of Seoul National University, the results came out that it was 12,890 years ago to 14,090 years ago.
However, the reaction of the domestic mainstream academic community was cold. Well, even in the domestic academia, who believed in the theory that “the origin of rice farming = China”, one day, it must have been surprising to hear that a rice seed from 15,000 years ago had appeared in Cheongju on the Korean Peninsula.
However, skepticism about the excavation itself was too much. The chatter that I heard in my ears, who was in charge of cultural assets for the first time, was also amazing. “Did you hear me? Vinyl came out of the peat layer of the Sorori ruins.”
What do you mean? Archaeological excavations have value only when they are conducted on a stable level. However, if vinyl came out of the peat layer from which rice seeds were excavated 15,000 years ago, it means that the layer has been reversed, and it is no different than saying that modern rice seeds were mixed with plastic into the peat layer. Such gossip has resulted in distrust of the Sorori ruins from the ground up. Whether it is historical or prehistoric ruins, if there is a story that “vinyl was mixed”, how can you trust the archaeologist who excavated such ruins? So, how did the “vinyl” story come about?
Ahn Seung-mo, a former professor at Wonkwang University, who wrote a thesis that raised several questions about the character of the Sorori peat seed (“Improvement of the rice seed excavated from the Sorori peat layer in the petition,”) also euphemistically criticized the “dissemination of vinyl rumors”. “At the time of excavation, in the area where the rice seeds were excavated, there was an artificial fill layer in which the surrounding lowlands were reclaimed for civil works to a depth of 3.3 m.” Ahn Seung-mo interpreted, “Perhaps the person who talked about “vinyl” may have mistaken the vinyl from this fill layer as being excavated from the peat layer.”
However, in a good way, it is an illusion, in a bad way, it can be said to be a malicious attack. In any case, perhaps because of this attack, the Cultural Heritage Committee dismissed the “preservation plan for the peat layer” in which rice seeds were excavated in 1998. In today"s terms, innocent people (remains) die from unfounded malicious comments (vinyl luck). Ahn Seung-mo regretted, “If it had been properly preserved and investigated at that time, much more information would have been obtained.” Because of this situation, non-experts like me had no choice but to keep a close eye on the remains of Sorori because of the “vinyl” story.
