-non-combatant (非戦闘員)
1.a member of the armed forces who does not actually fight in a war, for example an army doctor
　戦争で、実際には戦闘に参加しない軍隊に所属する人々、例えば軍医。

　戦争において、軍隊に所属していない人々、Civilian (民間人、文官) 比較(=対義語) 戦闘員

官庁で働く公務員

the government departments in a country,
except the armed forces, and the people who work for them:
軍隊と、それら(軍)のために働く人々を除いた、国の官庁で働く(人々)。：

-military service
1.a period during which young people train in the armed forces:
　若い人々が、軍隊(軍人)で訓練している間(期間)=要約すると、兵役期間の意味
2.the time sb spends in the armed forces:
　軍隊(軍人)の期間=軍人として働いている期間
